Windsurfing sites on Fuerteventura

If you are into windsurfing, Fuerteventura is the place to come on holiday.

It's climate, warm waters and dozens of deserted beaches make it a windsurfing paradise.

Thousands of windsurfers come to Fuerteventura every year. Some decide not to return! So you can see why windsurfing is the main sport on Fuerteventura - the beaches, the sea and the wind make for ideal conditions.

Windsurfing conditions on Fuerteventura

With warm clear waters and strong Atlantic winds, the conditions could not be better for windsurfing enthusiasts.

Windsurfing can be taught in a day and there are plenty of excellent windsurfing centres around the islands offering professional tuition and a full range of equipment.

The constant trade winds in the summer and the large Atlantic swells in the winter offer a range of conditions to suit all - from flat out slalom to extreme wave sailing in the north.

Windsurfing, kite surfing, jet-ski ... with more than 150 beaches on the island, many are ideal for water sports. Here are a few sites:

Windsurfing in Corralejo, Fuerteventura

Corralejo is populat because of the abundance of accommodation and the famous sand dunes. Windsurfing centres can be found in Corralejo and at the popular Flag Beach about 4-5 kms out.

Windsurfing in Caleta de Fuste, Fuerteventura

Caleta de Fuste is ideal for windsurfing beginners and as a base for trying more challenging windsurfing beaches for the more experienced surfr.

If you would like to try your hand at windsurfing, pop down to the windsurfing school on the beach at Caleta de Fuste towards the harbour. They run special "taster" windsurfing classes where you can find out whether it is suited to you.

With a long shallow bay and barely a ripple n the sea surface, it is ideal for windsurfing beginners or windsurfers a little out of practice.

Windsurfing in El Cotillo, Fuerteventura

El Cotillo is a windsurfing challenge suited to more experienced surfers. Big crashing waves, reefs and large shore dumps make this a place for the experienced windsurfer.

A little local knowledge helps and there are several windsurfing bars where you can have a drink and pick up a few tips.

Windsurfing at Sotavento, Fuerteventura

A supremely popular windsurfing, kite bording and surfing area, these beaches are easily reached from Caleta de Fuste and Morro Jable.

The beaches at Sotavento were the windsurfing venue for the 2005 PKRS Kiteboarding Grand Prix in July 2005 which attracted the best kite borders in the world and the Kite Boarding World Cup in summer 2006.

Extreme windsurfing on Fuerteventura

Extreme windsurfing conitions can e found on the wild and rugged west side of the island. You can find plenty of rugged bays on this coast. It pays to take along another windsurfer for safety though because many of these are deserted. Look around Ajuy and Playa Amanay.
